Training On Your Period
If you are a female that loves the gym but feel like whenever you get your period you have to take a break from the gym because your experiencing menstrual symptoms such as cramps. consisptation, cramps, mood swings, heavy or sore breasts and acne.
The truth is you can still exercise while you’re experiencing these symptoms. Having a clientele full of women helps me understand periods better as every one of my clients experience of it is different.
While you’re on your period you may think you need to give yourself a break but truth being said you don’t because the mental and physical benefits of exercise don’t stop because you have your period. Often times the worst thing you can do is break your routine because keeping your routine will help you stay focused, you get an endorphin release, it may also ease some of your symptoms.
Both progesterone and estrogen are at their lowest during the entire length of the period phase of the menstrual cycle, which can make people feel tired and less energetic. If you decide to totally ignore exercise this won’t make you feel any better if anything it may make you feel worse and not exercising won’t save or preserve you energy.
How you feel should determine the intensity of your workout, if you feel moody or tired you should try jogging or running this may help.
During your period you experience different symptoms every day so its a good idea to reduce your intensity while lifting weight or doing cardio as this may reduce headache, cramps or back pain that may be associated with your period. When you undertake exercise you get a release of hormones called endorphins, they are natural pain killers when they release during exercise, you may feel relief from uncomfortable periods.
Sometimes you may experience period symptoms 2-3 days before it arrives so you could use this opportunity to get ahead of it by engaging in activities such as yoga or light cardio this can relax your body which can reduce your symptoms of cramps, breast tenderness or muscular fatigue.
It is okay to find exercises that you usually do with ease a little bit more difficult during this time frame, so don't feel disheartened and give up always think about the end goal.
I am not an expert on this topic I would still seek help from a medical professional to get further help.
