Weight Loss with Type 2 Diabetes

Weight Loss has always will been complicated for those who wish to pursue it. There are many obstacles to overcome some may need to overcome more than others, life is unfair like that but we have to work with what we are given nevertheless. This blog is dedicated to those who have Type 2 Diabetes who wish to embark on weight loss or to just expand their general knowledge.

What is Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes happens when the blood glucose stays too high over an extended period of time and the body does not produce enough insulin to match glucose levels or when the body creates insulin but does not know how to use it properly. The glucose cannot enter the cells around the body so it stays in the blood and the blood glucose levels become higher than they should be.

Insulin is a hormone in the body that controls the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood, insulin is created in the pancreas and helps the body keep glucose at normal levels.

Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

Symptoms of type 2 diabetes often develop slowly. In fact, you can be living with type 2 diabetes for years and not know it. When signs and symptoms are present, they may include:

  • Increased thirst

  • Frequent urination

  • Increased hunger

  • Unintended weight loss

  • Fatigue

  • Blurred vision

  • Slow-healing sores

  • Frequent infections

  • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet

  • Areas of darkened skin, usually in the armpits and neck

When a person suffers from this condition there's a-lot of factors you may need to consider when attempting weight loss starting with your body. You need to understand where you are physically because certain exercises may not be an option for you due to mobility issues, strength or high risk of injury, I would recommend working with a fitness professional or a friend who is advanced in the type of workout you decide to chose.

Medication plays a tremendous role because some medication such as Glipizide, Glimepiride, Glyburide are all medications that are hard to lose weight on because it contains insulin and insulin is primarily a fat storage hormone.

Environmental factors can make or break your progress because if you do not have the right support system around you, you may not go very far. Support system include immediate family members, partner and friend, they should be the ones that keep you in line anytime you fall off track to ensure you do not derail from the goal.

Weight loss as a Type 2 Diabetic consists on incorporating a healthy lifestyle, so exercising regularly roughly 2-3 times per week minimum!!. Eating in a caloric deficit that is eating less than your daily requirements. I would suggest any where between 200-500 calories per day less than your required maintenance calories.

Do not under-eat as you have to be responsible and make sure you eat enough to avoid a low blood sugar.

Theres little steps that you can start taking now and over time they will lead into big changes such as

  • Getting off the bus a few stops earlier and walking home

  • Parking the car at the furthest part of the car park

  • Take the stairs instead of the lift.

  • Limit the amount of time you watch TV

The goal is to lose weight over a steady period of time while retaining muscle but shedding fat, trying to loose it all overnight will only lead to you developing bad eating habits in the long term trust me I've seen it happen before with myself and others.

You also have to build up the will power to keep going when thing get tough because it's not always going to be easy but think about the end goal by loosing weight you can better control your diabetes or possibly go into diabetes remission. They are both very achievable goals if you put your mind to it and refuse to get distracted.

While there is no "diabetic diet" you should possibly incorporate a low carb diet as this will reduce the amount of glucose in your blood which will then regulate your insulin over time. With that being said Type 2 diabetics should limit or avoid highly processed foods and meals high in sugar such as saturated fats, sweets, fizzy drinks.

Remember there is no one fits all approach to achieve this goal, it will be a-lot trial and error before any progress is made, regardless of your circumstance diabetic or not your health should be you number one priority.

My dad became a Type 2 Diabetic in his early 30's, if you looked at him you would never assume he had diabetes because he was naturally slim not once has he ever been overweight but he had bad habits very bad habits, he would drink a full bottle of freeway cola from lidl every day, eat and sleep in the same spot. He never exercised and ate highly processed meals. When he got diagnosed with diabetes he was shocked he couldn't believe it, but now as I reflect back his lifestyle choices caused him to get diabetes quicker than he probably should have. I myself may have a strong chance of getting diabetes because it may be in my genes but time will tell.

I am not an expert on this topic I would still seek help from a medical professional to get further help.
